You do not have to be a member of Biggin Hill & District Horticultural Society in order to exhibit at our shows.

Exhibition Classes Summer Show are divided into sections and numbered as follows –

Horticultural Section

Exhibitor’s attention is drawn to Show Rule 2a

Rose Classes. Old definitions of roses have been used

Classes 1- 11 – Containers are supplied for exhibitors use

1. One T. or large flower rose.
2. Three T. or large flower roses, one container, one cultivar.
3. Three H.T. or large flower roses, one container, three cultivars.
4. Five T. or large flower roses, one container, one or more cultivars.
5. Ten T. or large flower roses, two containers of five roses (each to contain a different cultivar).
6. Six blooms, in any container, one or more cultivars
7. Three sprays miniature roses, one container, one or more cultivars
8. One spray of polyantha roses
9. One spray of floribunda or cluster flower roses.
10. One container polyantha roses, three sprays, one or more cultivars
11. One container floribunda or cluster flower roses, three sprays, one or more cultivars
12. Three T. or large flower roses, one cultivar, three stage blooms, one bud, one perfect, one full. To be staged in three containers.
13. Most fragrant rose
14. A miniature rose , grown and exhibited in a Pot not to exceed 7” (178mm).
15. Bowl of twelve T. or large flower roses, one or more cultivars. Space allowed 24” (610mm).
16. Indoor grown flowering pot Pot not to exceed 9” (229mm).
17. Indoor grown foliage pot Pot not to exceed 9” (229mm).
18. Six stems of Sweet Williams in a container.
19. Delphinium – one spike in a container.
20. One container of annuals (not provided for in this section), or flowers treated as such, g. bedding plants, one kind, one or more cultivars. Minimum six stems.
21. One container of perennials (not provided for in this section), or flowers treated as such, one kind, one or more cultivars. Minimum six stems.
22. One container of Sweet Peas – twelve
23. One container of Sweet Peas – seven
24. Two containers of Sweet Peas – seven stems in each container, different cultivars
25. A frontal arrangement of roses, one or more cultivars, any kind, any Space allowed 24” (610mm).
26. Bowl of Sweet Peas, any Bowl size up to 8” (203mm) diameter.
27. One pot of African Violets
28. One pot of Streptocarpus
29. One pot of cactus or succulent
30. Outdoor flowering pot plant, not to exceed 9” (229mm).
31. Outdoor foliage pot plant, not to exceed 9” (229mm).
32. Fuchsia – pot not to exceed 9” (229mm).
33. ¼ or ½ standard fuchsia (¼ = 10“- 18” , ½ = 18” – 30”) in a pot.
34. Bonsai in a pot.
35. Three Lilies, any variety, in a container
36. A container of pinks, one or more varieties
37. Flowering Pelargonium (Geranium). Pot not to exceed 9” (229mm).
38. Hanging basket – Max 24” (610mm). (Any type of basket may be used).
39. One Orchid – pot not to exceed 9” (229mm).
40. Unusual container planted – Max 16” (406mm).
41. Unusual plant in a pot.
42. A branch from a flowering shrub in any container – overall entry judged for quality, variety and arrangement

Vegetables

43 Four potatoes, one cultivar

44 Six broad beans

45 Six dwarf beans

46 Six pods of peas

47 One cabbage to be staged with approximately 3” (76mm) stalk

48 One cauliflower to be staged with approximately 3”(76mm) stalk

49 One lettuce

50 Calabrese, three heads

51 Three beetroot, tops shortened to approximately 3” (76mm).

52 Salad Three salad vegetables (fresh) – one of each kind.

53 Any other vegetable (e.g. rhubarb).

Fruit Section

Exhibitor’s attention is drawn to Show Rule 2a 

Each Class should be fruit of the same variety.

Exhibitors to provide own plate not to exceed 200mm (8”) in diameter.

54 2 raspberries shown with calyx and stalks

55 12 gooseberries shown with stalks

56. 12 strawberries shown with calyx and stalks

57 Blackcurrants shown with stalks

58 Redcurrants shown with stalks

59 12 tayberries shown with  calyx and stalks

Floral Arrangement

DOMESTIC SECTION

66. 3 Butter Whirls – see recipe below
67. 3 Cheese Scones.

Handicraft Section

Exhibitor’s attention is drawn to Show Rule 2b

Class

69. Lavender Pillow.
70. Journal (Covered note book etc.).
71. Homemade Birthday card.
72. Papier Mache Object.
73. Recycled Charity Item (Your Own Imagination).
74. Dress a Straw Hat for Summer.
75. A painting in oil or acrylic – not to exceed 24 inches (61cm) – (Contemporary, Abstract, Art Nouveau – Whatever takes your fancy).
76. A painting in watercolour – not to exceed 24 inches (61cm) – (Landscape, Impressionism, Pop Art – be adventurous!)..
77. A picture in a medium (Charcoal, pencil or anything other than described in classes 75 and 76
78. Any handicraft in wood, metal, clay or any other medium – maker’s own design.

Photographic Competition

Exhibitor’s attention is drawn to Schedule Note 2 relating to age groups

Class

79 Decay/Rusty Item/Waste etc.

80 Busy Street.

RULES

1. The competition is only open to amateur
2. Entries no larger than A4
3. Only prints may be They must not be mounted.
4. All entries in the Photographic Competition must be the exhibitor’s own

Beginners’ Section

Exhibitor’s attention is drawn to Schedule Note 3 relating to age groups

Exhibits to be staged in a container where applicable.

Class

81 Pizza Pot: Plant a container with essential pizza ingredients – basil, tomato plant, chives etc.

82 Pollinator Friendly Pot: Design a container garden using flowers that are attractive to bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects.

83 Top Tray: Vegetable Selection.

84 A Container of Five Herbs.

Children’s Section

Exhibitor’s attention is drawn to Schedule Note 4 relating to age groups

Class

85 Grow Bee Friendly Seeds – (In an old recycled carton etc.).

86 Home Grown Salad on a Plate – (e.g. lettuce, tomatoes, radish etc.).

87 Compost Making: Set up a miniature compost heap in a see through container (plastic bottle etc.) to demonstrate how to turn food and waste into nutrient rich soil.

88 A branch from a flowering shrub in a container.

89 1 Rose – any type in any container.

RECIPES FOR DOMESTIC CLASSES

 Parmesan Chips

ingredients

100g Parmesan Cheese

Method

1. Preheat oven to 200ºC/180 ºC fan/400 F/gas mark 6.
2. Line two baking sheets with baking parchment or non-stick liner.
3. Finely grate the parmesan cheese.
4. Place spoonfuls of cheese well-spaced on baking sheet and flatten slightly.
5. Bake in the centre of the oven for 8-10 minutes until golden brown.
6. Allow to cool and store in an airtight container until required.
